摘要:: Radiation therapy is increasingly used as a cancer treatment to avoid mutilating surgery. We first review the cancer sites where this role was first established (head and neck cancer, breast and prostate cancers). Then we examine the cancer sites where radiation treatments have only recently replaced amputation or other mutilating surgery (soft tissue sarcomas, anal and oesophageal cancers). Finally we review some sites where research in organ preservation is still ongoing, for example eye tumors and bladder cancer.
